At 9:30 on Massachusetts Avenue, close to Cambridge Common. I used to bike along this road twice a day during the first 4 weeks of my stay here. At night, Mass. Ave becomes a rather peaceful (un-)place, but during rush hours it resembles much more one of Munich’s major roads, with drivers that suddenly adopt a much more European modus operandi. Things suddenly seem to become more urgent then, people are determined to get somewhere, emotional deflector shields are being raised and set to the highest level, and drivers develop a sense of ownership of the road on which everybody else is a trespasser. Every day this gave me a warm, fussy feeling of being home. Thank you very much, Mass. Ave, for making my start here so comfortable!
