salt’n pepper

Enjoying the late afternoon sunshine on the Longfellow Bridge. The so-called Salt-and-Pepper Bridge got its nickname from the shape of its central towers. It is one of the bridges that connects Cambridge with Boston and it’s just around the corner from where I work. I don’t know exactly why, but almost every biker I see entering the bridge seems to suddenly switch into racing mode — unlike many that I encounter in Cambridge or Boston. Maybe it’s because they feel exposed on the bridge, with no buildings left and right to protect them from X (i.e. open space, the horizon, whatever); maybe it’s because any straight, apparently short (i.e. manageable) piece of road invokes the mental picture of a racetrack.
